First Day of School
It was the first day of school and a new student, a
son of a Japanese businessman, entered the fourth grade.
The teacher greeted the class and said, ÂLetÂs begin by
reviewing some American History. Who said ÂGive me liberty
or give me deathÂ?Â
She saw only a sea of blank faces, except for that
new student-Suzuki-, who had his hand up. ÂPatrick Henry,
1775, said the boy. ÂVery good! Now, said the teacher,
ÂWho said ÂGovernment of the people, by the people, and
for the people shall not perish from the earthÂ?Â. Again
no response except from Suzuki, ÂAbraham Lincoln, 1863Â.
The teacher snapped at the class, ÂClass, you should
be ashamed. Suzuki, who is new to our country, knows more
about its history than you do!Â
As she turned to write something on the blackboard,
she heard a loud whisper, ÂDamned JapaneseÂ
ÂWho said that? she demanded.
Suzuki put his hand up, ÂLee Lacocca, 1982Â he said.
At that point, feeling completely disgusted by
SuzukiÂs classroom superiority, a student in the back
sighed, ÂIÂm gonna throw upÂ.
The teacher glared and asked, ÂAll right! Now, who
said that?Â
Again, Suzuki raised his hand and said, ÂGeorge Bush
to Japanese Prime Minister, 1991Â.
Now furious, another student yells, ÂOh yeah? Suck
this!Â
Suzuki jumps out of his chair waving his hand and
shouts to the teacher, ÂBill Clinton to Monica Lewinsky,
1997Â.
